01/17/2019 – Globalization & Education

Metacognitive skills are essential when students are engaging in broad concepts encompassing globalization. The ability for students to engage in the multifaceted environment is based largely on what they learn about global competence in the classroom. Although there are many educators who are passionate about global competency as well as instilling the skill set within students to solve challenges encountered in a global community (i.e., pollution, resource depletion, and disease management) is difficult because as Mansilla & Jackson (2011) tell us teachers “cannot teach what they do not know” (p. 85). Equipping educators with multicultural professional development activities, classroom resources, and opportunities for international travel are all ways add transferable skills and competencies to the teacher’s toolkit to flow down to students.

01/03/2019 – Body Language in the Classroom

Eccles and Roeser (2009) found that the quality of relationships between students and teachers is an essential aspect related to a student’s feeling of well-being while at school. When students feel supported and cared for by their teachers, they do better in school.  Furthermore, Eccles and Roeser (2009) found that “When teachers hold high general expectations for students achievement and students perceive these expectations, students learn more, experience a greater sense of self-worth and competence as learners, feel more connected to their teacher and school, and resist involvement in problem behaviors” (Brophy, 2004; Lee & Smith, 2001; NRC, 2004; Roeser, Eccles, & Sameroff, 1998; Rutter, 1983, Weinstein, 1989; Wigfield, Byrnes, & Eccles, 2006; as cited in Eccles & Roeser, 2009, pg.406).
